I love Raintown, the best version being from " The Big Day Out" on Glasgow Green in'90 was it?, you should try and track it down, the band playing great, Ricky and, Lorraine's vocals in particular that day!!! She's singing from her gut somewhere!! :)

Have you guys ever listened to "The germans are out today"?
I discovered it after 10 years or so... From "So long ago" album. Would love to hear it live one  day...
Happy to see DB still perform. I have been a fan since 1988 and been to 4 concerts. Best one, Ricky Ross in Shepherd´s Bush, specially enjoyed "When sinners fall".

As new converts Kathy and I are still coming to terms with all the DB tracks albums and singles, but since the Preston gig last year we have hardly listened to anyone else, so cannot pick ONE favorite, but can pick a dislike-
Cut Lip. I am sure that someone of Ricky's talents has no need to descend to using the M-F word. Not necessary!

I think Love and Regret would have to be my fav, and I don't particularly like When you were a beautiful boy.

I think I have said this before; but Loves Great Fears is one of my favourites.  Been listening to it today.  I think now you mention it that Cut Lip maybe one of my least favourites too.  It wasn't the Deacon Blue we were used to.  I know they always like to try out new things, but there were some far better songs on that album that were more polished.

Ricky plays it quite often in his solo gigs.  There's at least one known live recording from Deacon Blue - the Edinburgh Playhouse gig from 1994.  And if you go look at circuslights.com you can listen to it.

Circus Lights, When will you (live), Real Gone Kid, He looks like Spencer Tracey & not surprisingly Dignity are my top 5 in no particular order. Don't make me choose a favourite.

Least - Born in a Storm/Ragman/Raintown. Just don't do it for me so least favourite as opposed to bad songs.

Great news about Perth gig

Ricky (and Davie Scott and Mick Slaven) did a great acoustic version of Cut Lip on the This Is the Life tour back in April 2002 and the swearing was dropped from the lyrics and it was great to hear an obscure DB album track given new life in Ricky's solo show... it was one of the things that sent me back to listen with new ears to Whatever You Say, Say Nothing... hearing some the unplugged radio session versions of Only Tender Love, Hang Your Head and All Over The World also had me hooked

I love The Germans Are Out Today but have just remembered an old favourite that I haven't heard for years - Wild Mountain Thyme. Love it - may have to go and find it right now!!! A least favourite is tricky but I've never been keen on I Was Like That (Closing Time b-side)

LOVE Cut Lip! A real dirty bluesy feel to it. Such a change from what they did before. Also a lot of the b sides from that era are overlooked - I've Been Making Such a Fool, Almost Beautiful, Paint It Red etc. Great tracks.

Think fave would be one of Beth's Gate, Your Town or Everytime You Sleep.

Least fave - much of Ooh Las Vegas, with a handful of exeptions. Also struggled with much of Homesick.

I totally agree with the positive comments concerning Cut Lip, it's a great track! Great guitar work from Mr Kelling. I would also back up PJ's comments concerning the b-sides from that era, some really solid work that has gone largely over looked. I would also add Pimp Talking and Cracks You Up to that list. I remember the clip from the 'From Raintown to Your Town' documentary with Ricky drunkenly swaying and singing on his chair with Greame and Ewen playing an acoustic version of Almost Beautiful! great stuff.

As for the favourite track, that's not an easy one to decide but I have a real sentimental attachment to Bound To Love so that's what I'll go for (at least today, anyway) as for the worst or least liked I'll reluctantly plump for something from Homesick, probably Out There.

Well I blew two sets of expensive car speakers with "Circus Lights", one in  1992 the other in 1996 ... it's still the best I think. Worst or rather least fav. is probably "Christine".

Incidentally is anyone on here from the original forum alla 2001 comeback site? (Should have kept my finger on the pulse but life got crazy, missed last years gigs, gutted.)

During Ricky's 2002 solo tour he played an acoustic version of cut lip  with davie stewert which was stunning and can be heard via glasgow skyline's mp3 section

I love 'The one about lonliness' - thay opened the show at Newcastle in 2006 with it an not knowing the song I was quite disappointed. I then bouth the Singles album and it's superb - sounds really emotional, beautiful lyrics, top tune -  hope they play it at the Sage in July :-)

It's very difficult to say about the best song, but I'd say I think the best song might be Bethlehem's Gate. Homesick comes pretty close.

About the worst, one that I use to fast forward is their version of I'll never fall in love again. I also never liked Hang your head.

the acoustic session version of Hang Your Head might change your mind... i think it may still be online at Glasgow Skyline... Virgin Radio session 1993 i think

agree not keen on cut lip  :-\, fav ... too tough, depends also on mood, been listening to "last night i dreamed of Henry Thomas" Love Town to be blamed" live at Hammersmith Nov 2007 too great memories :D

Post by: john gilbey on May 13, 2008, 08:18:07 PM
there are too many great songs to pick, but i have to say like klare that town to be blamed from hammersmith last year is just amazing, it gives me goosebumps espeacially the ending likewise with love and regret and jesus do your hands still feel the rain leading into bethlehems gate and walking back home, icould go on  and on,as for a poorer song , i cant really give one because i would feel to embarresed to type one ,each song has its own identity so id rather not give one :-[

my favourite is either dignity or chocolate girl. the worst well bear in mind i havent heard alot of their songs it is either real gone kid, orphans or something on fellow hoodlums.
there are some songs i like on fellow hoodlums i just remember being so disapointed with it. i havent listened to it for a long time and have been lucky enough to block out all memory of the bad songs on it.

I love Fellow Hoodlums! I bought my very own CD player when I moved into halls of residence at Cyncoed, Cardiff and then went stright to HMV to buy Fellow Hoodlums. The album reminds me of that time and all the freedom that went with living in my first student room all on my own. Within a couple of hours I'd learnt all the words!!! It also reminds me of meeting some brilliant friends and fellow Deacon Blue fans.

Hey Daveyhelen, I have almost same memories of Fellow Hoodlums when I lived in halls of residence at Nottingham University. I remember having the black t-shirt with Fellow Hoodlums artwork on it and DB tour posters on my room wall complete with little dints due to the bobbly paint they used to put on all halls of residence walls!!!!!! :)

Gentle Teardrops is an awesome song, but Dignity is the obvious choice I suppose, it's a timeless classic. I sang it at a gig last night & there were a group of Deacon Blue fans in, I got some nice feedback from them so it must have been okay. No pressure though eh! ;D

Hi all,
I would have to say most db songs are great to listen to and i guess thats
why we are all such fans but like most things you always get the odd 1 and mine is cut lip!!!!! :'( But great topic ;)

JCM, I found the black t-shirt at my mum and dad's last time I was there! Had to try it on, of course - it was massive!!! Three of us went to see them at The CIA in Cardiff and they announced they were splitting up. We were gutted! We'd spent the afternoon watching the Big Picture Live on video and had a fantastic time. We had to drown our sorrows afterwards! Oh the memories...

Yup - I know where you're coming from Helen, listening to Fellow Hoodlums, I remember it being launced on Radio 2 while at the Cyncoed Hall of Residence and thinking - wow this is different, wasn't soo sure at first, but did enjoy the B-sides.   Now I still love it.  (I didn't have a CD player, so I recorded the programme and probably still have it somewhere on a cassette tape).   Do you remember that record shop at the end of Macintosh place, he used to get hold of some great D.B. vinyls for me.  I got some quite rare stuff there.

it's probably time to go looking for that old cassette with the Radio 1 session on Gary Davies breakfast programme... they did a few piano and vocal duets with Ricky and Lorraine doing a few tunes like James Joyce Soles and Closing Time... but the recordings of that session haven't ever been all that good.

I don't know if the tapes will have survived all this time in storage,  I taped loads of interviews back then, I remember quite a few of them being Ricky and Jim on the keyboard.  Once there was a phone in and they would play the most popular song that got voted for live.  It just went to show they had talent.  I will probably even have that on tape too somewhere.  I think it was Dignity that got sung on that one.  I wonder what choice would come up trumps now if we had a free of all their songs?
